recycling in PG

I am a strong advocate for a recycling pick up in our area! The mayor wrote the following about recycling in our newsletter this past August.

RECYCLING: Many citizens desire a form of recycling in our City. Recycling is good! There are many factors that go into deciding on what kind of a recycling program to offer. Cost, convenience and participation are a few of the major factors. Pleasant Grove currently offers paper recycling collection bins in many locations throughout the City. These are located at the Jr. High, behind City Hall, the lots of grocery stores, etc. There is also a green waste recycling at two locations: Behind the landfill and behind the treatment plant on the other side of the freeway. The request for curbside recycling is a bit more complex. The providers of the program require a mandatory participation of 100% of the residents OR a minimum 50% voluntary participation. This is a more expensive solution to the tax payers. Because of the potential increase in mandatory costs, it is likely the Council will have this item placed on the November election ballot. It affects everyone and hits the fixed income and low income groups the hardest.

It doesn't seem to me that our mayor will be fighting for it, so we need to! I have tried saving my garbage and bringing it to the recycling bins around the city. It is hard! My garage fills up with garbage, it is a pain to get it to the drop off, and the drop offs don't accept many recyclables. Many of us pay for a second garbage can. From my understanding, a recycling pick up is cheaper than a second garbage can. Either way, let us not be the last city in the US to care about our environment! Be sure to get out and vote!
